I’m a Christian weight loss coach, but I also have coaches. Why? There are many reasons, but the most important one for me is to keep me on track so that I can keep others on track.

I learned a long time ago that as a Christian and a believer in Christ, I need to have a coach and I need to be coaching others. I need a coach to teach, encourage and challenge me to get to the next level spiritually. However, there are things I’ve learned that I need to be passing on to others as well.

Coaches Keep Us Focused

I have one main coach that I’ve had for many years because he knows me well and doesn’t let me get away with anything. He keeps me focused on what really matters. He doesn’t let me slide by with just being mediocre. He is always challenging me to go to the next level.

He’s the one who has taught me most everything I know about how to lose weight and keep it off. He was instrumental not only in helping me lose more than 250 pounds but in keeping the weight off. He’s someone who has had addiction issues himself and knows first-hand what I am going through. He calls me out on my shortcomings, but doesn’t just leave me hanging. He gives me advice that always seems to resonate.

He doesn’t just tell me what to do, he asks me questions. He makes me think. I love that. It’s very much like how God coaches me. One of the things God always whispers to me when I’m tempted of going off my eating plan is, “What are you doing?”

God asks me a question to make me stop and think. That way I will make an intentional decision and not a split-second, emotionally-driven one that I will regret. For me, one thing that is a must for any coach is that they always point me back to God.

Coaches Challenge Us

What I need in a coach is someone with a stronger personality than me that will speak to me directly and challenge me. I’ve found that in my mentor and my God.

In His Word, God says to me, “You will find true success when you find Me, for I have insight into wise plans that are designed just for you. I hold in my hands living-understanding, courage, and strength,” (Proverbs 8:14 TPT). I so need that on my journey.

I’m a strong, independent woman, but that doesn’t do me any good to try to figure everything out on my own. Like the writer of Proverbs says, “Go ahead and make all the plans you want, but it’s the Lord who will ultimately direct your steps,” (Proverbs 16:1 TPT). I need a coach who encourages me, but always reminds me of that.

Coaches Speak Into Our Lives

I also have a business coach and an author coach. Both are prophetic in that the things they speak into my life usually come to pass. It’s sort-of scary and exciting at the same time.

What I’ve learned by being a coach is that God does give me insights into things that He is doing in the lives of those I’m coaching. I’m not scared of speaking those things out because I know what an impact those same kind of words have had on my life.

We all have blind spots. These are areas we can’t see, but many times others who are close to us can. Because of how close they are to us, they may not be able to be honest with us like a paid coach can. It’s a very important reason to have a coach. For me it is imperative that I have someone in my life who has my permission to tell me like it is.

Coaches Lead From Experience

The other big thing I look for in a coach is experience. If they don’t have experience in the area in which I need help, then I won’t listen to them and I’ll just be throwing my money away.

My main coach has had experience in alcohol and food addiction. The fact that he’s been sober for 35 years or so is a big reason I listen to him. His food issues came after he got sober and then had a heart attack. He knows the dangers well.

My business coach is rocking the business world with her faith and business approach. More than that, though, she has been successful financially, has been in business on her own for 20 years and knows all the ends and outs of social media issues. Having a coach I can ask any question and get an answer is a huge reason I make sure I always have a business coach.

My author coach is a prophet, author, editor, book designer and speaker. God always speaks to me through her. She is the one I go to with questions about the books I’m writing. I have many questions and if I can’t find the answers on my own, I know she can help me. Just knowing she is there takes a huge weight off my shoulders.

What We Need In A Coach

In any coach I look for compassion, encouragement, direction, guidance, teaching and challenge. If I know they have my back in these areas I will be more likely to be committed to them and to take their advice. Coaches need our commitment. Without it no coach can be successful.

Here are 10 reasons we need coaches:

  • To help me figure out what my next right step is and then help me take it.
  • To get insight into why we might feel stuck.
  • To help identify and overcome the obstacles in our paths.
  • To get a different perspective on my problems or issues.
  • To help identify the lies and limiting beliefs that are holding me back.
  • To help me identify where I want to go and make a plan to get there.
  • To help me focus on the things that really matter and put the other things aside.
  • To identify where I am right now and where I want to be.
  • To speed up my progress and success.
  • To motivate and challenge me to be the best I can be.

How I Coach

This might as well be a list of what Overcomers Christian Weight Loss Coaching group is all about. Every one of these things we work on. I call it Overcomers Academy because I’ve been coaching for over five years and have 25 courses and  200 video lessons available in our members area on my website. Many times I will direct a person to a lesson that gives an in-depth answer to one of their questions.

However, courses aren’t the most important thing about this group. It’s not a group where I want you to come in, take a class and leave having amassed more information. It’s a group where I want you to learn and apply the lessons. I want you to ask questions so I can give you answers to help you identify and overcome the obstacles that are looming in front of you blocking you from going forward.

As your coach, when you post in our private Facebook group or ask a question on our monthly Question and Answer video call, I will answer you. I may point out something you haven’t thought about. I may help you understand that you have a blind spot you haven’t noticed and give you direction as to how to correct that. I may challenge you to reach farther, jump higher and run faster to get to your goal.

I also might encourage you to slow down, unwind and de-stress. I might point out that daily time with God is crucial for anyone going on a transformation journey. See, I don’t believe in just losing weight. I believe we must do what Romans 12:2 MSG tells us to do. “Fix your attention on God. You will be changed from the inside out.”

How Change Happens

Change happens first on the inside before it moves to the outside. This group is not another diet. As a matter of fact I strongly believe diet is a four-letter word and not a very nice one. What we are after is lifestyle change that affects every part of us—body, soul and spirit.

That, my friends, is why you need a coach who’s been there, who is committed to always following Jesus and always pointing you back to Him. If I were looking for a Christian weight loss coach, I would look first at their commitment to God and His Word. Then, I’d want to know if they have had experience losing weight.

For me I wouldn’t want to know if they’d just lost 20 or 30 pounds or even if they have a nutrition degree. I want to know that they’ve lost a large amount of weight and kept it off. This is a big advantage I bring to the table as a coach. Not only have I been trained as a life coach, inner healing coach and spiritual coach, but I have weighed 430 pounds, lost 250 and have kept it off.
