When God calls what do you do? Do you run the other way? Decline the call? Send it to voice mail? Are you surprised? Or maybe you are elated or possibly afraid? How do you even know if it’s Him or not? And if it’s Him, do you do what you think He’s saying or not?
What God Said
One day in March of 2013 I was doing my morning exercise, which consists of jogging in the community lap pool. I had just gotten in the water and was doing my own thing not thinking about anything except concentrating on and enjoying my time in the water. All of a sudden I heard someone call my name. It wasn’t loud, but I definitely heard it.
I looked around and no one else was near me. Then I heard it again. It was a little quieter this time. I looked around again more carefully, but I still didn’t see anyone anywhere looking like they wanted my attention.
Then I heard my name again. This time it was much more softly almost like it was coming from within me, I finally got the message. Like the boy Samuel in 1 Samuel 13:3-11, I realized God was trying to get my attention.
I slowed to a walk and inwardly said, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 13:10 NIV).
His voice was much louder this time, almost booming from within me. “What if I planned a writer’s seminar 10 miles from your house just for you and you won’t go because of pride?”
I stopped. I bowed my head in repentance. “Father, I’m sorry. I haven’t realized that pride has been in my way of writing this book, but I see that I have been determined to do this my own way. I will go if you will open the door.”
A little background here will help. I’m a journalist by trade, which means by that point in time I had over 40 years of experience writing articles. On January 1, 2013 God had let me know it was time for me to write a book. This had been a dream of mine for years, but I never knew what to write about.
God showed me that the book I needed to write would be about my journey of losing 250 pounds. I had been working on the book for three months, but I kept getting stuck. I had written a lot but had no idea what should go in the book and what I should leave out.
Then I heard about a Christian writer’s retreat led by someone a good friend knew. My friend had been trying to talk me into going, but the workshop was expensive and I felt I knew how to write and didn’t need anyone’s help. So what would this person be able to teach me that I didn’t already know?
When God spoke to me that day, though, I realized this workshop must hold something for me that all my training and the myriads of other writer’s workshops I had been to didn’t.
This was the clearest I’ve ever heard the voice of God. I knew going to this workshop was something I had to do. God extended the deadline so I was able to go. Meeting the amazing Wendy Walters at her first ever Release the Writer workshop was a divine encounter.
The Amazing Thing That Happened
To say the workshop was amazing is an understatement. God showed up in extra special ways during those five days. Wendy not only taught us, she was the voice of God speaking in my head prophesying and predicting things I never dreamed I would be doing, such as not just writing one book, but many.
She also told me I would be coaching others, something I didn’t want to do and was sure I’d never do. And then she hinted at the fact that I would be speaking and appearing on television. That was something I never in a million years wanted to do. What former fat lady wants the whole world focusing on her?
I went home and had that first book written and organized into chapters in two months. Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds and Stopped Trying to Earn God’s Favor was published in October, 2013. By January 2014 it was the number one Christian weight loss memoir on Amazon, a spot it still holds.
It’s been six years. I’ve written four books and two study guides and have another book coming out in March. I’ve been on many Christian television and radio shows, have spoken to groups and been a part of workshops all over the country.
It all happened because I choose to listen to God’s voice.
What Is God Saying To You?
I tell you all of this because II know you have seen one or two of my Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter or blog posts where I talk about my free workshop happening Monday, Feb. 11. However, you may have ignored any promptings you heard about attending.
Now, though, now it’s the third time you’ve heard the call and almost the eleventh hour. I am once again asking you to signup for my free, live, online workshop.. Even if you can’t attend, I will send the replay to all who sign up and you can listen to it that evening or the next day. However, it will only be available through February 15.
After I wrote Sweet Grace, I got tons of people asking me to help them lose weight too. There were so many that I didn’t know how to help them all. That’s when I began coaching and offering courses to help others get out of the bondage of sugar and comfort food addiction and into their very own transformations. It is the greatest privilege God has given me besides writing books.
Your First Step
My free workshop will tell you about the five stages of weight loss I’ve developed. These stages will help you understand the steps to take to experience your own transformation. The free workshop is designed to be a first step for you on this Journey to Transformation.
It’s the final hour, the third time you’re hearing God’s voice. Don’t feel like you can do this on your own. If you could, you would have already done it. Answer the call. Sign up for the free workshop and then show up Monday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 pm. I’ll share awhile and answer your questions.
