I walked into the house following a week away to a large beach towel spread across the floor. The dishwasher that we just fixed had flooded the kitchen. Thankfully, I wasn’t the one that had to clean it up. That was already done for me. It had been quite a mess.
Messes happen worse than a mechanical dishwasher breakdown. There are natural disasters, tornadoes, hurricanes, high winds that leave homes flattened or in need of a monumental repair. A house fire can happen through a wild fire or an electrical failure. These can cause messes that we didn’t create. They just happened.
Whose Fault Is It?
However, what happens when you actually create your mess? When I weighed 430 pounds, my life was quite a mess. I tried many times to clean up my mess with diets, pills, shakes, and any number of weight loss cures. All of them worked for the time I stayed with them. Inevitably, though, I went back to the way I was eating and gained the weight back, always with an additional amount.
I finally came to the realization that in order to clean up my mess and keep it clean, I was going to have to change … everything. I had to change the way I ate, what I ate, when I ate, why I ate, how I moved or didn’t move and how I related to myself, others and God.
Starting the Clean-up
It was a monumental task. And although losing weight was something I had to do myself, I needed help to stay the course. After all, to lose the weight I was going to need to lose, I would have to have encouragement, support, direction, focus, accountability, challenge and coaching. Finding the right people to help is not the easiest task. Thankfully I have a friend who is a cognitive behavior therapist who was already a mentor to me.
I joined a group he had formed called a harmful life patterns group centered around the theme of “Just Do It.” It was what I needed to begin to clean up the mess only I had created. I needed others, another and the Other to guide me on the journey. I needed others, those who were peers who had the same difficulties I did and were on the journey as well. I needed another, a mentor who understood the process and could guide me and challenge me along the way. And I needed the Other, my God to give me the power and strength for the journey.
Through this process, I became closer to God than ever before and began to understand more fully what He meant when He said to Paul, “My GRACE is sufficient for you for My power is made perfect in (your) weakness.”1 I was definitely weak in the area of foods, especially those made with sugar and flour. I discovered how addicted I was to sugar and how surrendering it to God finally became the catalyst to launch me on my journey to freedom.
After allowing God to help me clean up my mess and lose 260 pounds, weight loss with God’s help has become my greatest message. To help others, I wrote my weight loss memoir, Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds and then Sweet Change: True Stories of Transformation. I developed four Sweet Grace Video Short Courses and I began Sweet Change Weight Loss Coaching Group.
Sweet Change Group
The group is where the powerful God-stuff happens as we slog through the process of change, which is not always easy. Having an online group means we have people from all over the United States and foreign countries join us. I do a weekly video with study guide and action steps. We share our journey. Those in the group sort through their issues with my help. We’ve had many breakthroughs as God reveals Himself and His grace through this journey.
After coaching the group for nine months, I decided to pull out the seven key videos, study guides and action steps that have helped folk on this journey and put them in a course. Sweet Change 101: 7 Keys for the Weight Loss Journey is that course. I believe this is my best resource to date. Folk can go through the course at their own pace. However, I realized, they also really need the coaching group.
Sweet Change 101
My heart is to see people set free of the addictive nature of foods. It can be addiction to overeating, sugar, flour or other foods. I used to say, “I wish I were an alcoholic because they I could stop drinking. But I’m a foodaholic and I can’t stop eating.” Well, I can’t stop eating all together, but I can and have stopped eating things that I crave so much I can’t stop eating when I start.
There is a process to do that and so I’m offering any of my products to help, but I’m telling you the best one is Sweet Change 101 because I now have added two free months in Sweet Change Weight Loss Coaching Group. And I’ve added a payment plan over three months that will make the course doable for you.
I spent thousands of dollars on diets and programs trying to lose weight. I believe if you really tap into the power of LIFEstyle change with God as your Number One Resource, this will be the last program you will need. After the course, you can come into Sweet Change Coaching Group if you wish, however there is no obligation.
Your biggest MESS can become your greatest MESSage, just like mine has. I want to help you on your journey whether you have 20 or 220 pounds to lose.
