God has a destiny for each of us. He loves leading us toward all of the wonderful things He has in store for us. He’s got more than we can imagine, guess or request in our wildest dreams just waiting for us (Ephesians 3:20 MSG).
He could just order us to do our assignment, but that’s not the way He works. He didn’t make us robots. He made us humans with the capacity to choose to love our Maker and want to follow Him.
Following Him Body, Soul And Spirit
In order for us to do that, it’s going to take us making some major decisions about everything in our lives. Following God means we have to follow Him with all of our being—body, soul and spirit.
It’s that body part of us that gets in our way most often. We have real needs such as the need for fuel, water, shelter, provision, protection, companionship, comfort and more. Sometimes we get hung up on what we need versus what we want.
What we need is basic. What we want is more than what we need. At some point it ceased to be about the things necessary to survive and it became what we think will make us happier. Happiness is circumstantial. What makes me happy today becomes tomorrow’s necessity, which leads to an endless cycle of always wanting more.
God is into giving good gifts for His children, but what we call a good gift and His version are vastly different. God’s good gifts for us are not bigger houses, fancier cars and more money. That might actually not be a good gift. It might foster us living for the stuff rather than for Him.
Take Care of Your Body
His good gifts are more related to ultimate joy which only comes when we are walking in our destiny. So how we make sure we are walking towards our destiny rather than away from it?
One place to start is to see what God says about how we should be taking care of our bodies because if we are going to live out our destiny we need our bodies healthy.
“Have you forgotten that your body is now the sacred temple of the Spirit of Holiness, who lives in you? You don’t belong to yourself any longer, for the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, lives inside your sanctuary. You were God’s expensive purchase, paid for with tears of blood, so by all means, then, use your body to bring glory to God!” (1 Cor. 6:19-20 TPT).
Did you get that last last part. “I am God’s expensive purchase paid for with tears of blood.” He sent His Son to die on a cross for me so that I could live in a body. That means I better take good care of my body.
Magnifying The Wrong Thing
When we are overindulging in food and refusing to move we are actually walking away from our destiny. Paul addresses this in Philippians 3:18-19 NLT: “ For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.”
Paul is drawing back the curtain on the future here. He’s warning the Philippians like he did in the Corinthians passage that there is more to our purpose here on earth than these earthly and sensual indulgences. These individuals Paul was talking about were trading their eternal destinies for a bowl of stew, like Esau did in Genesis 25:29-34. All they saw was what they wanted in the moment.
For me, walking towards my destiny had everything to do with understanding that I cannot disregard taking care of my body.
I Had A Dream
Since childhood, my one dream had been to write a book that mattered. As an adult, though, I shattered that dream by gaining up to 430 pounds. I had no energy, no stamina, no clarity, no focus. I struggled with sugar addiction.
When I finally listened to the gentle wooing of the Holy Spirit and began my real journey to healthy living, I had no idea I was walking toward my destiny. God showed me that He and He alone was the strength I needed to lose the weight and keep it off.
After I lost the weight, God called me to write my memoir Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds. But He didn’t stop there, He called me to coach, to write more books, to form online courses and groups, to speak and to do television and radio interviews.
He let me walk right into my destiny when I obeyed His call to take care of my body, not by going on another diet but simply by following Him in how I eat, move and live my life.
