There is a huge myth that weight loss companies have perpetuated through years of pitching products to us. That myth is that losing weight is fast and easy. That may be true for a few people who are not yet addicted to foods that contain sugar, flour and high carbohydrates.

For the rest of us, those who are emotionally, mentally and spiritually addicted, not to mention physically, it feels like an impossible task. Stay tuned, though, because I’m about to get to the victory part.

Believe In God Period

I always saw my weight as a huge mountainous obstacle that loomed in front of me. It was so large I felt I was unable to go around it, over it, under it, above it or through it.

The truth is, as long as I saw my weight like that, it was an immovable, solid object. No diet could help me because I would just lose weight and gain it back again. Not even weight loss surgery helped me because I just found a way around it.

I felt my problem was so big not even God could help me. Stop. Rewind. That right there was my problem. Deep inside me I didn’t believe that God could or would help me. I believed I had gotten myself in so deep I might as well lay down and die. There seemed to be no way out of my very physical predicament.

Still, I just needed to believe in God. Period.

Believe In God’s Power

What I began to learn was even though weight loss is very physical, that’s not where I needed to begin. I had to begin with what I truly believed about the power of God, the strength of His grace and the depth of His compassion towards me.

“With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn’t late with His promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining Himself on account of you, holding back the end because He doesn’t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to change,” (2 Peter 3:9 MSG).

This is a powerful promise from God. He will wait for me and you to understand His plan and get on board with it. Our change will come when we begin to desire Him to work in us. If we continue to be content in our bodies, which have become very uncomfortable because of our overindulgence, then we will not change.

Be sure of this one thing. God won’t make you change. He will only set up circumstances to encourage you to want to change. And when you want to change, when you want to follow everything God has for you, you will find His grace will become your powerhouse for transformation.

Believe In God’s Plans

You do know that He has good plans for you. Most Christians know that from Jeremiah 29:11. We just think that we have messed up those plans so badly that even He can’t straighten it all out. That’s where we are wrong.

God is an expert at plot twists for our stories. He takes our messes and creates messages from our lives. We overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimonies, (Rev. 12;11).

We have to go through those tests and trials hanging tightly to God before our message has been purified in the furnace of His fire. Then, we can stand up to the enemy and say, “No, devil, I’m not listening to you. I’m a child of obedience. I listen only to God.”

Believe In God’s Project

The last stage of the five stages of transformation. is the one I call the Wise Overcomer. It’s where we are headed, but even when we get there we have not arrived.

We are still arriving. None of us will ever have it all together and do this journey perfectly. Even after losing 250 pounds, I still have days that test and try me. I’m grateful for those days, though, because they remind me that I am weak and I need the strength of God desperately every single day.

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me … For when I am weak, then I am strong,” (2 Cor. 12:9, 10b NIV).

We are God’s project and as such, He has ways to get us to the place where we see that transformation is just another step along our life’s journey. We do have to be willing to follow what His design is for us, though. He provides the strength. We simply need to trust Him to show us how to get there.

Believe in God’s Process

God has a process for us to get to our transformation. Going through this process helps us learn how to walk so close to the Master that we learn what His will for us is and then we willingly do it.

This last of the five stages is not a stage by and of itself. It is like building a house. We can’t put finishing touches on a house until we have the foundation built, the walls up, the plumbing and electrical roughed in, the heating and air conditioning ducts run. Then along in there somewhere the roof goes on. Then, the designers come in to add the finishing touches.

If there is a foundation leak, it affects the entire project and workers have to be called in to fix that most basic of problems. As Wise Overcomers we have the perspective to oversee the entire project of our transformation.

We have gone through every stage. So if there’s a water leak somewhere, we’re not going to throw up our hands and move out of the house. No, we’re going to go in and fix it.

Believe In God’s Victory

Wise Overcomers have insight. They have that experience. They have the years under their belts of doing this work. They know their own problem areas well, know what to do and Who to call on for help. They know it is God, and God alone, who brought them their victory.

Still, they are not islands. They also need coaches to be accountable to and they need to be coaching others. This is all part of God’s process.

He longs to bring us to victory in Him so we can fulfill the destiny He has already laid out for us. Even right now He calls us His masterpieces, His works of art, His poetry. He does that because He already sees us as victorious and Wise Overcomers!

“We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!” (Ephesians 2:10 TPT).

God is not finished with any of us yet. He has so much more in store for each one of us. Some of us feel we have sidetracked the destiny God has for us by giving in to food addiction.

Can I just tell you that walking this journey and losing more than 250 pounds fueled by God’s strength has brought me closer to Him than ever before? His power really does come into perfection in our weakness. I know. I’ve seen that at work in my life.
