Are you ready to dream what you fear is impossible? Our dreams are instrumental in going forward in any area, especially healthy living. Many of us are afraid to dream, though, because we feel what we desire is so impossible and will never happen. With that mindset we will stay stuck right where we are.

Left Teresa and Roy Parker’s wedding, 1977. Right, Teresa in 2013. Notice the exuberance when she fit back into that same dress after losing 250 lbs!

Uncomfortable Comfort

If we shut down our dreams, we shut down attaining anything more in our lives. We begin to believe that our uncomfortable comforts are all we can hope for.

Our lives have to be more than the dull routines we have established of going to work, fixing supper, doing the dishes, doing the laundry and putting away, going to bed, getting up and doing it all over again. So we overeat and snack to take away the boredom, which moves us farther away from our dreams.

Many of us wish we just had energy to get the basics done. When do we have time to dream? What good would that do? Wouldn’t it just frustrate us more to want something and never attain it? So we drown our sorrows with two-liters of diet soda and a bag of chips, candy, cookies or whatever we want.

We say, “No thank you. I’ll just let dreams be for those with the drive to make what their heart longs for happen. I’ll just accept my lot in life. End of story.”

God Dreams For Us

Here’s the big problem with that. God wants more for us. “Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for His miraculous power constantly energizes you!” (Ephesians 3:20 TPT)

A huge step in the transformation dream God has for us is to begin dreaming with Him. We need to dream big because God dreams even bigger. Before I began my lifestyle change journey I had stopped dreaming because the dream I had felt like too big of burden. I had tried in my own strength to make it happen and had just given up.

At 430 pounds I felt like I was in bondage to my body, my cravings and any temptation that came my way. I had accepted that I had a problem and unless it got taken care of, I was headed for an early death.

Activating My Dreams

Yet, God had placed dreams inside me. Dreams like seeing my son and daughter grow up. Watching them graduate high school and college. Being at my daughter’s wedding. Living a long and loving life with my husband. I knew God had called me to write a book that mattered.

I remembered what felt like once upon a time when I had lost weight and felt comfortable in my own skin. That was when I got married. The picture of me in my wedding dress became my goal, my vision, my most unbelievable dream.

That picture drove me forward on my journey. However, my dreaming didn’t stop there. I wrote out 101 more attainable dreams of what I could do when I lost weight. They included things like fitting in a booth at a restaurant, buckling my seat belt, shopping on the regular side of the store instead of plus side and more ordinary everyday things that normal-sized people take for granted.

Dream BIG

After losing more that 250 pounds I’ve seen every one of those dreams plus more come to pass. The most exciting one is when I unexpectedly fit back into my wedding dress in front of a small group meeting at my house in 2013.

Dreaming the impossible dream keeps your goal in the forefront of your mind. However, it becomes possible as we work with God for the strength we need on this journey. Jesus told His disciples, ““With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible,” (Matthew 19:26 NIV).

I know this first hand. When I let God lead me, losing 250 pounds became the easiest hard thing I’ve ever done. With God, my impossible dream came true.
