The Sugar Addiction Quiz

Goal: Own your difficulty or addiction and begin to do something about it.

Nothing happens until you Begin. Your day begins when you get out of bed. Your LIFEstyle change journey begins when you take the first step. For many this is the hardest part of the journey.

Hello, I’m Teresa Shields Parker and I’m a sugar addict.

I am and always will be a sugar addict. Thank God, by surrendering processed sugar I am free of those cravings. However, I know if I were to start eating it again, I would once again become addicted. It's something I am always mindful of. I never want to go back there again. I know what keeps me free and I know what puts me in bondage.

Are you a sugar addict? If so, your first step on this journey is to OWN your addiction. If you are not a sugar addict but just love the taste, you still need some ideas to cut back. So let’s find out where you stand.

Step 1. Take the Sugar Addiction Quiz

Mark those that are true for you:

  • You walk into your friend’s house after just having eaten a big supper. She just pulled brownies or oatmeal cookies out of the oven. She offers you some. Do you take them or say, “No I’m too full?”
  • She sends the rest of the brownies or cookies home with you. You go to bed. In the middle of the night you get up to use the facilities and you remember the treats. You feel like they are calling your name. Do you go and eat some?
  • You’ve had a horrible day. Is all you can think of eating sweets or something with high carbohydrate content?
  • Do you bake entire batch of cookies, eat them before anyone comes home, wash the dishes so no one knows and then feel guilty?
  • Do you make sure you have a sugary treat accessible or something you can bake quickly at all times?
  • Do you crave sweets constantly?
  • Do you feel you cannot truly celebrate unless there are sweets involved?
  • Do you attend events based on what you know will be there to eat, such as great baked pies, cakes and cookies?
  • A doctor tells you that you can never eat sugar again. How does that make you feel? Do you grieve just thinking about it?
  • Do you just love anything made with sugar and flour?

I could have answered a resounding YES to every one of those questions 10 years ago. Thank God today I can answer no to all of them.

How did you do? Did you answer yes to 7 or more of the questions? Well, then you passed. You, my friend, are a sugar addict. If you answered yes to 4 or more, you have a real problem with sugar and need to cut back. Actually, I’d say if you answered yes to even one of the questions, you really need to think about your sugar consumption and how to cut back. So here are some first steps you can take today.

Step 2. Own your sugar addiction

Part of starting on this journey is understanding the depth of the your sugar addiction and that it is owning you.

Paul said it well in 1 Corinthians 6:12 NASB: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.” Ten years ago I could not say that. Sugar mastered me and I knew it.

To turn it around I had to own that I am a sugar addict. I can with God’s help turn that around, but I will always be a sugar addict. I cannot go back to eating sugary treats or I am giving over control once again to sugar. And I will not do that.

Lysa Terquest in her book, Made to Crave, says, “Nothing tastes as good as peace feels.” I have adapted that to my sugar addiction overcomer’s motto. It hangs on my refrigerator door.

Step 3. Clean house

Let’s get prepared. Go to your cabinet and throw out all the items with sugar content. All of them. If you keep any, those will be your downfall, even your kids' sugary breakfast cereal. Let your family know if they want sugar they must keep it away from you in a place where you do not know they have it.

Remember, if they are not sugar addicts, they will not mind going without. If they are, they probably need to join you on your journey.

Get rid of all cake mixes, etc. Don’t leave any stone unturned.

If you cannot complete this step, it speaks volume in regard to your resolve.. I predict if you cannot complete this step you will have a difficult time on your LIFEstyle change journey.

Step 4. Restock

Now go to the grocery store and stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, meats., nuts for snack and cheese, if you can tolerate dairy. Buy items like avocados, olive oil, macadamia nuts that add healthy fats to your diet. Stay away from boxed and prepared foods. Check labels for hidden sugars.

Buy something special for dinner—roast, steak, salmon, a wonderful meat as the centerpiece of your meal. Choose some great vegetables. Make a meal that is high in nutrition and tastes good, too. Make your first evening meal a celebration without the sugar!

Step 5. Join a group for support and to get activated

When I owned the fact that I was a sugar addict, I knew I needed support. I needed others (those to walk with me on the journey), another ( a mentor or coach who's been there) and the Other (the power of God Himself). I was fortunate to find a group. After having such a wonderful experience, God called me to write my memoir, Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds. Then, folks wanted to know how they could do the same thing, so I wrote the Sweet Grace Study Guide.

After that folks wanted me to personally help them. So I began Sweet Change Weight Loss Coaching group which is still going today.
