When push comes to shove, what we really want is not just to lose weight to look better for our high school reunion or an upcoming special event, although may be what we are saying to our friends.
What Do You Want?
What do you want? I think when you really get down to it, what you really want is not just to lose weight. You also want to keep it off. You want lasting weight change. However you probably also feel it is impossible to obtain.
You may have been overweight all your life and have been on many diets and although some have worked for you to lose weight, you have gained it back plus more.
A recent study shows that women will go on 130 diets in their lifetime. An article in The Sun reported that women go on at least two diets a year and stay on them for an average of four weeks and three days.
Billion Dollar Diets
According to Marketdata Enterprises, a market research firm, Americans spend $60 billion a year to try to lose weight, which includes diets and weight loss foods and drinks.
These diets tell you what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat or give you a pill and say, “Keep eating what you want and take this pill.” The diet industry is alive and well while two-thirds of Americans, maybe like you, are overweight, tired and slowly dying.
Stress-laden lifestyles of working harder and longer hours while always needing more money just to pay your current bills, leave you little time to plan or cook healthy meals, much less exercise or examine why you are turning to food to relieve your issues in the first place.
No Quick Fixes
Most every weight loss program will promise a quick fix in some shape or form. It’s one reason I can’t use my legitimate before and after picture in an ad on Facebook. They consider it unrealistic expectations that I have lost 250 pounds.
My weight loss was very real, but it wasn’t quick and it wasn’t easy. Weight loss is hard work. Don’t let anyone tell you any different.
However, for me losing 250 pounds was the easiest hard thing I’ve ever done once I surrendered my food addiction to God completely and allowed Him and a coach to lead me on my journey.
Weight Loss Is Hard
I am a Christian weight loss coach, but I never promise quick weight loss. This is against what every marketing guru tells me that I should promise.
They say I need to promise that my coaching group, class or course will fix your urgent, pressing problem. They want me to tell you I can help you lose 20 or 120 pounds and that you can do it quickly and easily.
Thus, what we have is a thriving weight loss industry where you and others are continually spending billions of dollars. Sure, you might lose weight, but then you gain it back again plus more and then go on a diet again that same year.
This is more than OK with the weight loss industry because they still have you as a client. It’s not exactly false advertising because you probably will lose weight if you do what they say for a short period of time, but it won’t be what you really want, which is lasting weight loss. You haven’t learned how to keep that weight off.
You do need help, but not from another diet. You need a coach. You need others on the journey with you. Some of you. who have a lot of weight to lose, will need this kind of help for some time.
This is why I write blog posts, post on social media, write books, deliver podcasts, speak and do everything I can to keep the idea of transformation with God’s help on the forefront of your minds. For some of you, that’s all you need and if so, I want to hear how this is helping you.
From the Inside Out
For those who need more, it’s why I coach and offer a low-cost coaching group where you can get my direct help. My goal is to teach you not just how to lose weight, but how to transform from the inside out. (See Romans 12:2 MSG.)
I want to teach you how to change your mind, to incorporate new habits into your life, to address the reasons you are prone to eat away your emotions and to cast aside the limiting beliefs you have about God not caring about you.
I want to teach you how to begin to love and trust God even with what you eat and how you live your everyday life. God wants you to “take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before Him as an offering,” (Romans 12:1 MSG.) When you do that, things will begin to change.
I want to help you understand how madly God loves you and wants you healthy. He has good, awesome, indescribable plans for your life, not plans for your disaster. (See Jeremiah 29:11 NLT.)
Personalize Your Journey
We have to personalize our journeys. Diets don’t work because they are designed for the masses. As your coach, I will also teach you how to develop your own lifestyle change plan relying on God and your own experience with all the diets you have been on.
This isn’t a quick trip around the block. This is a journey that will last for the rest of your life. Most people don’t want to hear that, but I will not spoon-feed you. I will tell you the truth.
To lose weight and keep it off, you must also be willing to learn how to change. Yes, it will take some time. Yes, it will challenge you. Yes, there may be times you don’t like me telling it to you straight, but I love you too much to do anything else.
Your transformation will involve every single part of you—body, soul and spirit, but in the end you will emerge an entirely new creation. You will still be you only more you than you ever dreamed possible.
For any program to work, we have talk about what, how and when we should eat, but that is just the physical tip of the iceberg. Supporting the iceberg is all the emotional lies and spiritual misbeliefs that have become a part of us.
One big lie is that we feel like we can pray and ask God to fix us and He will zap us and make all our cravings and weight go away. While I have great faith and believe God can do anything He wants, I have never heard of Him instantly making 250 pounds immediately fall off anyone. It took me years to lose that weight.
Why Doesn’t God Just Fix Us?
Why doesn’t God just miraculously fix us? He wants us to learn something in this process. He uses any difficulty we have to draw us closer to Him if we completely surrender that problem to Him.
We should pray, but our prayers should be directed towards what God wants from us rather than what we want Him to do for us.
On my journey I had another, a mentor who had walked the journey and came alongside me to help me; others, those who were on the journey with me; and the Other, the power of God. All of these are important in order to step into total transformation. All of these are components in Overcomers Academy.
My Overcomers Christian Weight Loss Academy is open now for new members. We only open a few times a year when we are starting a new class. Right now that happens to my signature course, Journey to Transformation.
