When should I begin a weight loss program? Here’s the short answer that most people don’t want to hear: start now. Think about this, if you had started this time last year where might you be today?

My friend, Michelle Lee (click to read Michelle’s story) lost over 90 pounds in the first session of #KickWeight, my six-month weight loss coaching program. As a total the group lost an amazing 408 pounds. We’re starting that group up again right now and I want you to be a part of it.

I’m aware, though, that many who ask about beginning a weight loss program also have a lot of excuses about why they can’t start now. There are many but here are just a few I’ve encountered. Everyone counts on me. I have too much to do. I’ve tried weight loss programs and it they just don’t work for me.

Whatever the excuse, something always seems to be in the way of taking care of the one who should be your primary concern—you. The truth is no one can take care of you, but you.

Everyone Counts On Me

I’ve noticed that most everyone who has a problem with food or excess weight seems to carry the weight of everyone’s else’s problems as well. It’s almost like we eat more so we can shoulder the burdens of those around us.

I see many caregivers, kind, compassionate, loving, intelligent people with extreme weight issues. Many are in the health industry or ministry and know what they should do. The problem isn’t in their knowledge.

The problem is in their emotional need for something to help them get through the burdens they have shouldered. It’s as if they don’t matter and everyone else does. Eating has become their solace, a place to try to feed the aching inside that caring for everyone else brings.

In the end, they end up not being able to care for others because their health has plummeted.

I Have Too Much To Do

Having too much to do is like a badge of honor for the American lifestyle. It’s also indicative of someone who doesn’t stop long enough to take a good look at where they are and what is happening to their health.

Our busy lifestyles overwhelm us and add to our stress levels. We eat fast food on the run because we don’t have time for anything else. We grab fried chicken or pizza for the family supper because we had to work late or attend a school function, church meeting, business supper, conference, etc.

We find ourselves engorged, tired and irritable at the end of the day because we still have way too much to do. We couldn’t shoehorn in even a minute for any kind of healthy living lifestyle.

We’re just too busy to take care of ourselves. Until one day everything comes to a screeching halt when our body says enough and all of sudden as if without warning we find ourselves in the hospital with a cardiac surgeon telling us we have only a few years to live if we don’t lose a whole lot of weight.

Weight Loss Programs Don’t Work For Me

America is obsessed with quick and easy. So despite the fact that it took 30 or 40 years to gain the extra 100 to 200 pounds we are lugging around, we want a program that will take it off quick and easy.

Can I tell you a secret that everyone in the weight loss industry knows, but won’t admit? There is no quick and easy way to lose a whole lot of weight.

I’ve lost 100 pounds at least five times in my life, probably more. I always put it back on plus more until I discovered that the diet mentality just doesn’t work. I had to accept that I needed a lifestyle change.

That means it’s going to take you longer than a minute, unless that’s as long as you want to live. It’s going to take a lifetime. We don’t want to face that fact. We think we can have our cake (weight loss) and eat it too (the actual cake).

We see skinny people do it all the time. Why can’t we? Because those same people are not addicted to certain foods like we are.

We have issues with food. We’re going to have to make some firm commitments. We are going to have to surrender the foods that have become addictive to us. We are going to have to allow God to help us and lead us to a healthy lifestyle.

Getting Help

More than that we are going to have to get help on this journey. I don’t mean another diet or menu plan. What we eat is only part of the problem. Why we eat is way more important. Beyond that why we want to become healthy is paramount to actually getting there.

The truth is you can’t keep eating the same way you’ve already done and expect to lose weight. That’s just insane. Something has to change.

I want to let you know that I totally understand where you are right now because I have been there. I’ve lost more than 260 pounds. I lumbered around in the 400-pound plus lifestyle for more years than I care to remember.

God brought me out of my bondage, much like the children of Israel. I crossed my Red Sea of baptism and spent my time wandering in the dessert of change. Now I’m seeing the Promised Land and let me tell you, it’s glorious. It’s heaven right here on earth.
