“The Holy Spirit is a person who has feelings,” explained Paul McDonald, interim pastor, Christian Chapel, Columbia, MO. “He inspires, encourages, speaks and grieves.”

Holy Spirit 2McDonald pointed out that the Holy Spirit grieves over our actions. He also grieves over what is happening in the world today. However, the more angry and militant Christians get over the way the world acts, the less intimate they get with the Holy Spirit.

In 2 Corinthians 3:14 the Apostle Paul talks about the individual attributes of the Trinity. He mentions the grace of Jesus, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

Fellowship of the Spirit

Fellowship with the Holy Spirit indicates a partnership between individuals and the Holy Spirit; it indicates understanding and cultivating a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit much like one would do with someone they love.

“We should be able to know when the Holy Spirit is laughing and when He is crying,” McDonald said. “We need to be sensitized to Him. We need to know His heart … We need to develop a sensitivity to His whisper when He says, ‘That is not right.’ We need to be pray and ask the Holy Spirit what to do and then do it.”

Constant
The Holy Spirit is a constant in the world. “He has been around forever,” McDonald continued. “He is active in humanity. He is not just hit and miss.”

Regarding the leading of the Holy Spirit, McDonald explained many times His work is more red light than green. Many times He leads by stopping and redirecting individuals. “We want the moving of God,” McDonald said. “We don’t want to squelch that. We want His Spirit to flow through us, to direct us and lead us. We need Him more than ever.”
