People fall into two categories. They are either stuck in the bondage of their past or they are on the path towards their future destiny. There is no third category of going nowhere because to go nowhere is to go backwards. To be stuck … in the bondage of the past.

out-of-the-bondage-of-the-past

Paul said it best. “Let me be clear the Anointed One has made you free not partially, but completely and wonderfully free. We must always cherish this truth and stubbornly refuse to go back to the bondage of the past.”1

Is God Real?

In order to go forward instead of staying where we are we must face one huge issue. Is God real or not? Mark Batterson in his book, Chase the Lion: If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You It’s Too Small, makes a bone-chilling true statement. “Most people believe God is real, but few people act like it.”2

If this is true, what would it look like if we really acted like we truly believed God is real? You know who God is right? He’s the One who spoke and light became a reality. He’s the One who owns everything you can see and all you think you possess. He’s the One who raised Christ from the dead and whose very Spirit lives in those of us who have trusted in Him.

What If We Acted Like We Believe God Is Real?

What if we simply acted like we believe God is real? I can’t speak for you, but in my life I see some important ways things would change. Here are a few among many others.

  1. I would take more risks and do whatever God told me to do knowing He has my back.
  2. I would introduce Him to everyone I meet because He is the most important Person in my life.
  3. I would not be surprised when He did what He said He would do. I would simply say, “Thanks Daddy for healing, providing, saving, renewing, reviving yet once again.”
  4. I would see the supernatural potential in people more than the way they appear in the natural.
  5. I would stubbornly refuse to go back to the bondage of my past but instead look towards the destiny of my future.

Out of Bondage

The last point is the most important to me. I lived in bondage for years. It was a bondage I willfully put myself in. It was a bondage of food addiction.

Now as a Christian weight loss and spiritual life coach, I deal with many people who are stuck in the bondage of their past. They are, like I was, trying to drag a huge gunny sack full of tons of concrete blocks marked shame, guilt, rebellion, anger, disgust and despair.

They carry these things with them because what if they laid them down and someone else discovered their secrets? What would those others think? Instead, they’d rather drag it with them for safe-keeping.

Yet it is killing them, body, soul and spirit. It feels as if lugging these terrible secrets is the only way to deal with everyday life and stay somewhat sane. But what sanity is it to drag your past with you and chain yourself to it every day?

Laying It Down

We must lay each one of these things down at the foot of the cross. We must give them to the ONLY ONE who can carry them. What a relief it was when I did that. After that, the weight was easy to lose because, my friends, the God I know is real. He’s not only real, He’s beyond humongous. He fills the universe.

We hand Him our issues and He has room for the issues of the rest of the billions of people in the world who exist today, have existed and will exist.

We have to let go of this stuff that is weighing us down. “Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. Looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith.”2

Running Towards Destiny

We are in a race. It’s really a marathon we call life. Sometimes we feel like we will never make it. The road seems long, but there is also time to stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the scenery, touch a life, bring love and joy and laughter back into the world.

There is time for God to lead you step by step towards what you were uniquely and wonderfully designed to do. There’s time to discover your destiny.

“We are God’s poetry, a recreated people who will fulfill the destiny He has for each of us, for we are joined to Jesus the Anointed One. Even before we were born God placed in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it.”3

Throw off the bondage of your past. Hand it to God. That baggage is doing you no good. It is only weighing you down. Then, run with patience the race set before you looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of your faith.1

Scary Dreams

Yes, it’s a little scary to think you might need to rise to a different level. The place you are in right now has become your comfort zone. It’s become your normal even though you may gripe and complain about it, you are too afraid to break out into something else because that would feel abnormal, risky and risk is uncomfortable.

If your dream doesn’t scare you, it’s too small. Dream big, my friend. God does. He loves scary dreams.

“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you to accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream and exceed your wildest imagination. He will outdo them all for His miraculous power constantly energizes you.”4

God’s Got Power For That

What power is that? It’s the power that resides in all of God’s believers. It’s the power that raised Christ from the dead. It’s the power to do the impossible. To chase down and kill the 500-pound lion like Beniah did in 2 Samuel 23.

One more thought from Batterson, “Most of us spend our lives running away from the thing we’re afraid of. We forfeit our dreams on the altar of fear … At the end of our lives, our greatest regrets will be the God-ordained opportunities we left on the table, the God-given passions we didn’t pursue and the God sized dreams we didn’t go after because we let fear dictate our decisions.”6

Author of Fear

My friends, the evil one is the author of fear, which is simply false evidence appearing real, but God is the author and finisher of my life and yours. What if we simply lived like we truly believe God is as real to us right now as I am and you are? What difference would that make in your life? What risky step of faith would you take right now?
