Starting anything new means we have to stop something else we are doing to make time or room for it. This is just a fact. If I have a full closet and I want to buy a new outfit, I have to either discard, give away or sell something. I have to make room for the new thing. I have to make room for change.

The Change Journey

The same is true when we decide we are going to go on a change journey of any kind. We have to make room for it. This is very true of a weight loss journey. There are some old ways we are going to have to give up in order to make room for the new changes we will be making.

I’ve lost over 250 pounds. When I started my journey in earnest, I realized I couldn’t do it the way I’d always done it before. This time I was going to give it my all. That meant, in order to cut down on the stress of such a change, I needed to give this my all.

I had been filling my free time with serving on various boards of directors and working in various organizations. I said, “Yes” to everything. If it was a good cause, I did it. All of that came to screeching halt.

I realized if I didn’t make my health a priority, there would be none of me left to volunteer. So I quit everything extra and began focusing on exercise, eating right, drinking water, sleeping, working and relaxing in good ways and at proper times.

Changing Habits

I worked on changing all my old habits one at a time as God led me. I couldn’t do it all at once. That’s akin to a diet. It never brings a lasting change. I had to stop a bad habit and replace it with a good habit. And it wasn’t just start exercise and stop eating candy, although that was my first habit change.

It also involved starting good habits of quiet, surrendered times with God, listening to great podcasts, discovering new Christian music, filling my mind with great audiobooks, taking time to journal and pray. Of course I also involved what, when and how much I ate.

Each of these steps were measured steps towards the new healthy lifestyle I wanted. It was after God’s lifestyle of wholeness, happiness and health. I wanted this to last. No more yo-yo dieting. If I was going to do this, I was going the whole way.

Totally New

God wants us to be made new. Actually, He wants us to be made totally new and He wants to help us get there. When we are enfolded into Christ, that’s what He does. He makes us entirely new. Everything that is has to vanish. Everything He brings us will be entirely fresh and new.1

This is an entirely new way of looking at life because in order to do this, even with weight loss, we have to listen to what God wants for us. It’s not about jumping on board with the lastest, greatest diet, it’s just about total submission to the God of the universe.

It’s about us bowing low before Him and saying, “God whatever you want, that’s what I’ll do. That’s what I’ll eat. That’s how I will exercise. I will run this race for You. I’ve got my eye on the goal, where You are beckoning me onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.”2

The Biggest Change

What does being made new look like? Do we change our appearance? When we get in God’s presence we will certainly change. God’s glory makes us new.

The biggest change, though, has to be in our posture. We must live our lives in humility before Him. That means we have to recognize God is God and we are not. We have to know our place before Him.

We have to come to Him not with plans for Him to bless, not with wish lists for Him to fill, but with a surrendered heart, mind and body that says, “Whatever You ask of me, God, I will do it. No questions asked.”

When we do that, we immediately accept all the love in the world into our lives because to love Jesus is to do His will.

Posture of Submission

What does a new creation look like? It looks like total submission. It looks like a humble heart. It looks like a man or woman facedown in the presence of the Creator God. It looks like love. It looks like adoration. It looks a lot like worship.

We talk about this and more in our new Overcomers Community. We’d love to have you join us, but time is short. Doors close at 11:59 PM, January 2. The price is only $27/MONTH for our Grand Opening.
