I have a confession. I used to hate 1 Corinthians 10:13 even though it is the standby get out of temptation scripture. “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
I didn’t like that verse because I didn’t want a way out of temptation. I wanted to eat whatever I was tempted by and still lose weight. That doesn’t work on several levels. Yet, I knew enough about God to know that It was true that He would provide a way out temptation because I had experienced it many times.
Many Ways Out
For instance, I can remember several times when I wanted to make and eat Grandma’s homemade oatmeal cookies. The first way out He provided was that I didn’t have the ingredients to make them.
This is actually a great tip for side-stepping a temptation. When we don’t have the ingredients or the foods we want to binge on handy, it should make us stop and think and decide not to give into temptation.
Not me. I stubbornly trudged to the store, got the ingredients, went home, made the cookies and stuck them in the oven. Then, because I was running short on time trying to get a million other things done, I forgot them and they burned.
That was my second way out. I had to throw that batch out because they were beyond repair. I could have stopped there and realized that I needed not to give into temptation. Instead I had enough ingredients to bake another batch, which I did. I kept careful watch on them while salivating as I dreamed of the taste.
When they were done, I put them in my mouth only to realize there was too much salt. That was the third way out. Did I take it? No, I ate them anyway. This is the true picture of a sugar addict and a Christian who has stopped putting God in first place.
There is a little different way to look at this verse though. “We all experience times of testing, which is normal for every human being. But God will be faithful to you. He will screen and filter the severity, nature, and timing of every test or trial you face so that you can bear it. And each test is an opportunity to trust him more, for along with every trial God has provided for you a way of escape that will bring you out of it victoriously,” (1 Corinthians 10:13 TPT).
We are all tempted or tested. It’s what builds our character. If we make the right choice we know how to get through that the next time. If we don’t, we still learn what we did wrong and plan a way to do it right the next time. The good news is God will help us. He sees what we are going through and will help us when we are in the midst of temptation. We have to trust Him to show us the way to come out a victor and not a victim.
When we embark on a lifestyle change journey the evil one loves to stir up our desires and throw temptations in our path. That’s why it’s great to do this journey with a group of folks like you who understand what you are going through. I feel privileged to have been able to facilitate coaching groups and courses for five years. During that time I’ve seen many folks step into their own transformations.
Michelle and Dawn
Some of their stories are on the Journey to Transformation page. Folks like Michelle who says, “After a divorce I began having weight issues now three years later, thanks to being in Teresa’s courses and coaching groups, I have lost 93 pounds, regularly do weight-lifting and am married to a new God-given blessing of a husband!“Learning to forgive deep-seated hurts in my life helped me go forward to lose weight and begin to trust and love again. I’m thankful for the inner healing I received from Teresa and her course.”
Or what about Dawn, whose healthy lifestyle change journey helped her get rid of diabetes and lose 68 pounds. She says, “I was diagnosed with diabetes about 18 months ago. I did not take medication. Instead I got serious about lifestyle change.
“I have quit lying to myself and started taking care of me. In the process, I’ve lost 68 pounds. My diabetes is gone and my A1C was 5.1 for my latest lab. I am off blood pressure medication and currently take no medication! Teresa’s coaching has literally been a lifesaver!”
These individuals and others whose stories are on the Journey to Transformation page came to one of my courses or groups only wanting to lose weight. They learned, like I did, that transformation involves more than just what we eat. In order to lose weight and keep it off we have to have to change mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.
