I thought my life was over and done with when the cardiac surgeon told me I only have five years to live unless I lost at least 100 pounds. At 430 pounds, I thought it was too late.

“It’s never too late to step into freedom,” I heard the still, small voice say. But I felt my body was broken and beyond repair. I felt destiny had passed me by.

My client. Rhonda Burrows worked on resolving her emotional and spiritual issues to lose 60 pounds. Here she is in 2014 and today.

Part of me knew, though, that there were and still are greater plans for me. The disaster my body had gotten in was not in God’s design. He has only good plans for me and for each of us.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”1

Freedom for me came from understanding some very basic things.

  • God loves me and wants my success even more than I do.
  • My relationship with God has to be fixed first, then my emotions and finally, my body.
  • To follow God, I must obey what He shows me to do.

I started where anyone would start who has a weight issue. I started with trying to fix my body. Of course, that ended in disaster because I wasn’t following what God had shown me to do.

What propelled me to lose over 250 pounds and stop eating sugar and flour was realizing that those two substances had become what I relied on to get me through my day.

I didn’t rely on God. I relied on comfort foods. They controlled me. I didn’t control them. “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”2

I had willfully placed myself in bondage to a substance. This reality meant my spirituality was not what I thought it was. Could I transfer my allegiance from food back to God?

Going through some deep inner healing with forgiveness, renouncing lies and hearing God’s truth really began to set me free. Working with a coach who understood my pitfalls and helped me through them was literally a lifesaver for me.

I’ve learned a lot, lost over 250 pounds, kept it off for four years and coached a lot of people to help them work with God to remove the roadblocks in their way to their destinies. One thing I’ve found that helps everyone and anyone, whether they have issues with weight, drugs, alcohol, finances, relationships, or general brokenness, is working one-on-one with a coach who understands and has been there.

One person I worked with is Rhonda Burrows, who at 4’10” transformed by losing 60 pounds. “There are certain comfort foods I ran to over and over, but had never connected the dots to why,” she said. “The whys were so emotionally entrenched in my past that I could not separate them out until Teresa took me deeper to the root. I had to have help in all areas, body, soul and spirit, to be successful.”

Lisa Niles added that working with Teresa “helped me understand that God does care about how I treat my body and is a willing partner in my weight loss journey. Before I began this journey, I was a sad person. I hated who I was. During my journey, I finally realized how to love myself, treat myself well and know that I am loved back by God.”

Excess weight is only one of many presenting issues we work on in freedom coaching. I love the process so much because it is what God used to set me free from the bondage of food and sugar addiction and take me into a deeper relationship with Him.

There are so many other bondages people are in. We just feel paralyzed like we have no choices in our lives, but God always gives us a choice. We can go forward or stay stuck and move backwards. Forward is the only gear God has. When we go with Him, we move forward.

Whatever you are facing right now, it’s never too late to go forward to your destiny.

“We have become God’s poetry, a recreated people who will fulfill the destiny He has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born He planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it.”3
