I have joined the ranks of the Overcomers having lost over 260 pounds. I can tell you it is a miraculous and wonderful feeling. However, it didn’t happen magically. It only happened when I decided to give in to the supreme and all-encompassing love of my heavenly Father.

Excuses, Excuses

There are many I come in contact with who say things to me like, “Well, you can lose weight, but you just don’t know how hard it is for me.”

Then they proceed to tell me the list of issues I know all too well. I know them because I was once the issues queen. I’ve learned the secret is admitting you have a weakness rather than trying to excuse it away with the endless lists we make while eating our favorite snacks.

I can tell an excuse a mile away because I’ve given every one of them at one time. This is the main reason I never wanted to be a weight loss coach. I felt I would be too harsh on people. I’m normally a do or don’t person. I knew a coach had to have something more than that. Something like compassion which I felt bereft of.

When God Calls

When God called me to begin a weight loss coaching group back in 2014, I told Him as much. He let me know that was why He wanted me to coach.

“But I have no compassion, God.”

“I can help you with that.”

“How?”

“I just gave you the gift of compassion.”

“just like that?” I asked.

“Yeah, go try it out.”

I was walking into the pool where I exercise every morning. After donning my suit, I walked into the pool area and waves of compassion hit me. Everywhere I looked there were extremely large people. Of course, I’d seen them before, but now I had the overwhelming urge to run up and hug each one. I didn’t, but I so wanted to.

“Ok, God, I get it. You gave me compassion. Now, what do I do with it?” I whispered.

Through the months He taught me how to have non-confrontational conversations with people who were like I once was. I printed cards with my before and after picture so they could see I understood where they were. One by one bridges were built.

In My Blood

Coaching seemed to be in my blood. I had been trained as a life coach, simply because I wanted to go as far as could and get as much from my life coach as I could. Now I saw that I’d be a really good coach because I wouldn’t let anyone get away with an excuse.

Last night one of my coaching clients said, “You see my soul so clearly that it scares me sometimes.”

I told her, “I know you because I have lived where you are.”

I see now not with judgment, but with eyes of compassion and love. I see how for 30 years God kept giving me chance after chance after chance not just to change my life and ditch my disobedience, which is sin, but to fall into His arms of love. When I abide there, the foods I crave seem to fade away.

Love Is the Key

I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God’s desire for me is to find my true identity in Him because He loves me unconditionally. It is my goal, not to demean or call people on their antics and failures, but to show the compassion and love that God has always shown me on my journey.

God wants my success even more than I do. He’s the One who has been rooting for me all my life. He’s the One who’s been waiting for me to simply choose life. The way I do that, though, is by loving God through obeying what He shows me to do and committing myself to Him and no other.

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This[a] is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land.”1

Be An Overcomer

God has called us to overcome what our bodies cry out for. We do not have to give in to what we crave. We confuse “our selfish interests”2 or desires for hunger. The two are miles apart.

Paul explains it best, “I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.”3

We are to manage our appetites and not let our appetites manage us.

We are to run the race well. We are to “strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”4

It doesn’t matter if we want to eat a certain thing or decide not to exercise or make a decision to participate in some addictive behavior that pulls away. It only matters what God wants. Everything else is a non-issue. He is the One who gives us life.

The only thing we should be concerned with is tasting and seeing that the Lord is good.It is no coincidence the Psalmist used that analogy. There is nothing that tastes any better than knowing we are following the Lord in all our ways.

There is no greater feeling than being loved, empowered and guided by the God of the universe to join the ranks of the Overcomers!
