Teresa’s Note: Each month Karen will share an update on her weight loss journey. She started with a goal of losing 200 pounds. You will be able to see her progress in the post title.
It’s been a month since I declared my intentions. I made the choice to live.
There have been both victories and struggles over the past month. Thankfully, I’ve had help to get me through.
The biggest victory is that exercise has become a regular part of my life. My family is swimming three to four times every week at our local YMCA. After swimming, I feel good and have pain relief from my inflammatory arthritis for a couple of hours afterward. That has been a wonderful incentive.
The other benefit is that it’s something active I can do with my children. They love going with me, and after doing my exercises we play in the water and then sit in the whirlpool together. It’s a great Phys-Ed for homeschool. Once a week, my husband joins us, too.
Physically I’ve noticed my jeans have gone from feeling tight to loose. I would love to say good-bye to size 34 forever!
The biggest struggle is emotionally and spiritually. I still want to just “check-out” and eat, but I can’t do that, and I am forced to face painful emotions and find alternative ways to cope with those and with stress.
I find myself turning to God and pleading for His help over and over again. Other times, I am too proud and try to handle things myself. I am learning how this journey is leading me ever closer to Him.
In our Sweet Change Group, I was encouraged to incorporate more worship music and the only conclusion I can come to is that the kids will have to be involved. I keep thinking that this is something I do separate from them, but really, they are a huge part of everything I do. I have to reconcile myself to that fact.
I manage to carve out time alone once a week for concentrated journaling and thinking. During these times I often watch a video and journal on a study guide and complete action steps from Sweet Change 101 or Teresa’s weekly video in our Sweet Change Group. These are invaluable to help keep me focused.
Yes, the scale is showing progress. However, it’s like getting in your car for a 200-mile trip. You feel like you’ve been in the car forever and you’ve only just gotten past your own neighborhood! There is still a long journey ahead. I’ve lost six pounds and I celebrate those. However, there’s still 194 to go and I stay focused to continue.
The most important thing for me to do right now is to fully engage with God for His help to get me through and to take it one day at a time. I ask for prayer that I would not be afraid to seek God with all my heart for every situation where I want to turn to food. The verse keeps coming to me over and over– “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”1
New stop/starts this past month
- Stopped eating dried fruit. Started eating fresh fruit instead, especially berries.
- Stopped eating so many carbs. Starting ramping up the veggies. Have been including veggies in two meals daily, and at least one meal veggies are the main feature.
- Stopping using so much butter. Started using more olive oil. I have researched that olive oil is particularly helpful for arthritis inflammation.
A special thank you to everyone who wrote such encouraging words and comments. I am so grateful for the prayers and support.

Sweet Change 101: Seven Keys for the Weight Loss Journey and Sweet Change Weight Loss Coaching Group go hand-in-hand. Sweet Change 101 has seven foundational videos, study guides and action steps to get you started on your LIFEstyle Change journey. These videos are invaluable, but they work best with Sweet Change Group. That’s why, when you purchase the course, you get two FREE months in the Sweet Change Weight Loss Group.
The price of the course is LESS than the price of two months in the group. Changing my mindset was the most important thing I did on this journey. It’s what helped me lose 260 pounds. Utilizing both of the resources I’ve developed, as Karen is doing, is the best way you can get there. Part of my mindset change was thinking I had to do this journey alone. The group I was part of was instrumental in my journey because we were never meant to live in isolation. We need each other.
Start your journey today with Sweet Change 101. You’ll get to be part of the group and after two months you can join if you wish.
I made a LIFEstyle change for my LIFE. And I’m so glad I did. You can, too.
