God’s grace definitely has benefits. It brings us closer to God and to others. He gives us strength to carry out our purposes and destiny. It forgives when we make wrong choices. And it propels us forward when we tap into it’s rhythm.
God gave me His sweet grace for every time I ate things I knew I shouldn’t. The unbelievable thing to me is that He knew my tendencies from the start and still gave me grace. He also knew my weakness for sugar would be the thing that led me the destiny He has for me. It’s a destiny with benefits beyond what this world can provide.
Grace for Failure
The incident that brought me to accept Him as Savior came when I stole candy from the grocery store. He knew my weakness for candy, cookies, cakes and pies. He knew it could lead to my downfall.
Still, He gave me choices, free will. And when I made the wrong choice, He gave me grace for every time I ate something I knew would lead me deeper into an unhealthy lifestyle.
If I were God I wouldn’t do things that way! I’d make there be dues and requirements to stay in the “Christian club.” If folks didn’t follow they would be out. No mercy given.
God isn’t like that, though. He has grace for every time we fail. Grace for all our chosen addictions. Grace for every wrong choice. What benefits grace has!
Yet, He gives us a choice so we have a 50-50 chance of making the right one. When we do, there are benefits. Making right choices lifts us closer to Him. It makes living here on earth much more enjoyable and tolerable.
Today, living with 260 less pounds on my body definitely has benefits. For one, my husband can wrap his arms all the way around me. I have energy, stamina, clarity of mind and a excitement about what today and the future holds. Each day is a new adventure I get to experience with those I love.
He gives us grace because He needs us to complete the work here on earth to be His hands and feet to share the message with others just like us.
He knows we will mess up. He has grace when we repent, turn from our wrongs and run to Him.
He told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in your weakness.”1 Grace brings us closer to Him. It shows us we NEED Him more than anything else in the world.
Is He always powerful? Yes. However, His power is not activated in our lives until we admit our weakness, stop trying to implement our plans and lay everything at His feet. In our surrender, the power resident in grace is activated to move our lives forward. The benefit of surrender is the access to His power!
Rhythm of Grace
Grace has rhythm and will move our lives forward if we get in sync with its movement. Part of that is laying down the things we are trying to carry that we were never meant to carry in the first place.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”2
He takes our burdens and gives us grace gifts to carry out His work when we are tapping into His strength. He forgives us when we sin even if we are His child. Upon our repentance He gives us the power to do the work of the kingdom.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.”3
Why are the gifts are given? In order to serve others so that in all things God may be praised. The benefits to His grace gift are that we finally begin to understand what He wants for our lives.
Grace for Destiny
God has an amazing plan that involves us. We just have to be open to His plan.
It’s not about our perfection, it’s about His. It’s about acknowledgement of our abject poverty of spirit and His unlimited riches of grace. It’s about our willingness to lay everything at His feet. Then, and only then, can He move us forward into our destinies!
“For we are God’s poetry, a recreated people who will fulfill the destiny He has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus the Anointed One. Even before we were born, He planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it.”4
