Ask anyone I grew up around. I’ve always been a go-getter, achiever, reach for the stars type A personality. I clothed in spiritual terms, of course, but it was basically an I got this, I can do this by myself mentality.
Along with that achiever mentality, I have this planner in me that incessantly maps out what I’m going to achieve. When something throws a kink in my plans everything can go south fast. It’s disaster just waiting to happen!
There’s a funny thing about our plans. We think they protect us, but only God’s plans can do that. Remember, He has plans for our good and not our disaster, (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT). Most of my disasters happen because I tried to plan things that weren’t what God wanted.
You might be thinking what happens when an achiever and a planner gains an enormous amount of weight? That’s one part of my life where what I wanted wasn’t the best for me. The problem, though, still came when my own plans failed me miserably.
My Weight Loss Plan
My own plan to lose weight always involved some aspect of not completely giving up the foods that were very addictive to me. The interesting thing is, most every diet I went on agreed with me. Everything in moderation, the diets would say. You can eat it, just plan it out.
Let me ask you, have you ever heard a sobriety counselor give that advice to an alcoholic? When I finally came to my senses and realized I was like an alcoholic only with sugar, it all came together for me and made sense. Even then, though, I couldn’t rely on my achiever-planner mode.
I had too much spiritual, emotional and mental baggage to be able to plan out how in the world I was going to accomplish the seemingly impossible feat of losing more than 250 pounds.
The End of My Rope
As a matter of fact, I didn’t even want to think about it and God knew that. He also knew that after 30 years of trying every diet imaginable to try to lose weight and eat what I wanted at the same time, I finally had come to the end of my rope.
And yes, I had even had weight loss surgery and lost weight, but was gaining it back faster than a bullet train. I was headed towards my ultimate disaster, one completely of my own making.
If this was a movie, we’d call this scene the climax where it looks like the character is going to conquer the problem and then everything falls apart. There were no more tricks left in my achiever-planner bag.
This was the moment God had been waiting for. It was the moment when He could finally get my attention. All it took was one person saying something very simple. “Alcoholic is one molecule away from sugar. Alcohol is liquid sugar.”
With that statement all my plans to lose weight and still eat what I loved went out the window. I could hear God’s words. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” (Deut. 30:19 NLT).
Anytime I’d read that verse I’d always said, “Of course, I choose life. What other choice is there?” But that day I saw I was actually choosing death each time I choose to eat the things that were making me super morbidly obese.
I Am A Sugar Addict
I was addicted to sugar and comfort foods. To stop I needed a God-sized intervention, which He supplied at just the right moment. He turned my story around and gave it a happy ending. It’s one where I lose 250 pounds and put God back on the throne of my life.
See “a person may have many ideas concerning God’s plan for his life, but only the designs of God’s)purpose will succeed in the end,” (Proverbs 19:21 TPT). Or as the wisdom writer also says, God has “insight into wise plans that are designed just for you,” (Proverbs 8:14 TPT).
These days I find my achiever-planner mode kicks in best when I’ve got God’s direction first. He gave me gifts to use, but not to achieve what I want. They are to achieve His purposes and His only.
God’s Got You
I love Philippians 4:13 and I used to use it like a weapon to just stop with “I can do all things.” Leaving off the “through Christ” is like unplugging your life from the power source.
God got you, but not so that you can get everything you want. His plans are always designed for what’s best for you and what brings Him glory. Because we are stubborn there will be times when we have to face tough truths.
One I had to face was I cannot eat processed sugar period, end of discussion. God told me that back in 1977 when I first began to gain weight. To say I struggled with it is an understatement. It took me 30 years and gaining more than 250 pounds to finally come to terms with it.
Still, God never stopped working with me, wooing me, gently calling me back to Him. I have many blessings in my life, but truly the sweetest of them all and the one thing I know for sure is that Jesus loves me madly.
All I have to do is love Him back obediently, fiercely, passionately. One way I do that is following what He shows me to do regarding my healthy living journey.
This is the fifth key in the Seven Keys for Spiritual Weight Loss series and it is a big one. The question we need to ask ourselves is when our plans don’t work out do we blame God and scream and cry or do we realize His plans are best and follow Him?
