Did you know God was a fashion designer? It’s true. He’s custom-designed a wardrobe just for you and he very much wants you to wear it every day.
The clothes God has designed for us fit us perfectly. The old clothes need to be thrown away.
It reminds me of the clothes my son put on Monday morning. All his clothes were packed ready for his trip to Wisconsin where he moved on Tuesday. He’s lost more than 60 pounds since the last time he was home. He put on a shirt and pants that were way too big for him. They were some of his favorite clothes before he lost weight. But Monday they made him look like a vagabond. Those clothes were obsolete. Thank goodness he didn’t take those with him.
The point is not that we shouldn’t wear t-shirts or jeans that are four sizes too big. God could care less. He does, however, care if we continue to put on attitudes such as irritability and meanness. He doesn’t like it when we wear profanity, when we clothe ourselves in lies, when we put on a bad temper, when we wear dirty talk underwear.
He also says that grabbing any old garment we want, the one that just strikes our fancy at the time, won’t work. This wardrobe includes sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust and just doing or saying whatever you feel like doing or saying whenever you feel like it.
Like me, you may feel like you have thrown away all those old clothes. However, God gently reminded me of my tendency to eat whatever I feel like whenever I feel like it. For instance, last week I so wanted to say to my daughter, “Let’s go get a cinnamon crunch bagel at Panera’s. Why? Because I want one.” That may be an item of clothing you can wear. For me, it is one that needs to be thrown away. I’m agreeing with God not to eat certain things.
Eight years ago, my food indulgent lifestyle was very telling in the clothes I wore. I still have a size 4x pair of pants to prove it. I keep them as a reminder that I never want to go there again.
Because cinnamon crunch bagels once had such a firm hold on me I have decided I will avoid Panera’s. The other day I’d already eaten lunch but my daughter hadn’t. I told her we could go through a drive-through to get her something. Yep, there’s a new Panera’s and yep, she wanted to go there.
I didn’t think much of it because she was getting lunch not breakfast and we wouldn’t be going inside. When the window lady told her she could have a free side with her lunch like a bagel, fruit or yogurt, she chose my favorite bagel. I didn’t even know when she ate it and I was not tempted…much. It was a true test of whether I’d thrown that type of clothing away or not. I passed the test. I didn’t want to put on those 4x stretch pants again.
The new set of clothes God himself has picked out are tailor-made for us. They include wills of discipline, hearts of love, hands of kindness, feet of compassion, cores of humility, minds of quiet strength and emotions of being even-tempered and forgiving.
God tells us in Colossians 3:14 that this is the basic, all-purpose garment that we should never be without. It fits perfectly. It’s not too small or too big.
It’s like the new outfit that you see and immediately fall in love with. When you put it on, it’s perfect. It’s so awesome you never want to take it off.
When my friend lost 50 pounds, she didn’t even want to give her clothes away. She hated them so much she threw them in the trash. I told her she should have given them away. However, on second thought I think an even better idea would have been to throw a party and burn them as a firm reminder that she never wants to go there again.
We should do the same with any garment hanging in our mental closet that no longer fits. God himself designed us a unique wardrobe; one that has an inner glow about it. When we put on the clothes made by Designer G.O.D. we shine from the inside out.
Why would we want to wear anything else?
