One of the oldest people to earn a college degree is Amy Craton of Hawaii who at 94 went back to finish what she started in 1962 when life got in her way.

Learning Brings Knowledge

She said she didn’t like not doing anything. “I couldn’t see just sitting there watching Netflix all the time.” The other nugget I found attributed to her that I love is, “I have so much more to learn.” This is evidenced by the fact that after getting her degree in creative writing and English in 2017,  she immediately enrolled in a master’s degree program and began taking classes.

Even though she’d lived a long and good life, she refused to just sit and watch the world pass her by.

She, like many others I’ve read about who continued their education well past the time when most people are even alive, made a decision to learn something new to keep their minds sharp and clear and their experiences intact.

Even though Americans are obsessed with getting college degrees, this obsession with learning and experiencing new things many times stops when we get older. We believe the old adage that “old dogs can’t learn new tricks.” That just isn’t true.

Experience Brings Wisdom

Now that I’ve passed my 65th birthday, I can officially call myself as a member of the wise guys club! Wisdom is the advantage of getting older, but it’s a wisdom that comes from experience and that experience includes pursuing God.

God says, “If you wait at wisdom’s doorway, longing to hear a word for every day, joy will break forth within you as you listen for what I’ll say,” (Proverbs 8:34 TPT). I’ve found that to be more than true. God gives us wisdom based on what we have learned and experienced.

We don’t have to go to college to learn something new. If we just learned to apply what we’ve learned through experience, we’d have a post-doctorate degree in life.

Degrees Make Experience Possible

I do have both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but I don’t think either of them made me any smarter. It was the experience I gained through jobs that I got because I had those degrees that made me able to navigate my chosen field better.

Sure I learned a lot of things in college, most of which I have forgotten. The only things I remember are those that I put into practice in my daily life and thereby gained experience.

When I weighed 430 pounds and wanted to lose weight, it wasn’t what I learned when I was on a diet that helped me lose over 250 pounds. It was what experience taught me while I was trying to lose weight.

God Plus Experience Equals Wisdom

More than that, it was what God whispered to me about what I was experiencing that spoke to me the loudest.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free,” John 8:32 NIV. That word “know” is not the word we think of knowledge. It’s the word that means to really know it down deep in our being. We only have that deep sense of knowing when we experience God’s truth in action in our lives.

This is what sets us free. When we have experienced truth, no one can pry it from us. It has actually become part of us.

The Truth I Have Experienced

The truth I have experienced is that God has a process for our transformation. I know that down deep in my spirit, soul and body. There was no bigger sugar addict than I was.

When I finally stopped trying every diet in the book and realized all the knowledge in the world won’t help me, I realized surrendering sugar to God was the only possible solution to my predicament.

My experience had taught me I can’t do this on my own. Now my experience was going to teach me how to go through God’s process of transformation.

Success Path for Healthy Living

I’m excited to share that with you in my free workshop where I will share with you the Success Path for Healthy Living that God took me through. This process changed my life. Now I want to help you discover this same process because I believe us old dogs have enough experience that we can apply it in some new ways.
