For years I was sure I wasn’t worth anything. I was good for nothing. Worthless. My sins of overeating for most of my adult life wreaked havoc on my body.
Even after losing 260 pounds, I still have residual physical issues and deep-seated sorrow for what I did to God, myself and others by engaging in my food addiction.
I didn’t realize how much I focused on what I’d done to myself, being sorry for it, until I heard this statement. “Don’t be in debt to your past, to those sins in your past. They are forgiven. They are gone. You don’t have to keep trying to make up for them.”
Finally God got it through my thick skull. I need to forgive myself for what I did to my body, mind, heart, will and spirit. So that day I did that. I simply said to myself, “I forgive you for overeating, for doing harm to my joints, for almost killing me. I know God has forgiven me and now I am letting go of these things I have done to you and the idea that I need to somehow make up for those sins.”
As I handed each area to God, I asked Him what do You give me exchange? I didn’t demand, I just asked because I know the things He gives me will be inspiration to go forward from the place I’m at to the next step on my journey. And there will always be a next step.
Here’s what I felt He said to me in response. “I give you the comfort of the Holy Spirit, the strength of the Lion of Judah and the ability to rest in Me knowing You are My daughter and nothing you ever do would ever make you more My daughter. You, My daughter, are enough.”
He also reminded me of Galatians 5:1 which tells me that I am no longer in bondage to my past. I‘ve always felt that if I was in bondage I would still be overeating and walking in the sin of gluttony. Praise be to God, those are in my past.
That is what it means on the surface, but now I also know there is a deeper meaning for me. In my prayer time, Jesus revealed how this Scripture applies to me today. Here’s my personalized version based off of The Passion Translation.
“Let me be clear, The Anointed One, who is Me, has set you free, not partially, but wonderfully and completely free. So, now I want you to ALWAYS cherish this truth (hide it in your heart, ponder what I’ve done for you, don’t forget it) however, you also must stubbornly refuse to rehearse it and always be trying to repay this as a debt of when you were in bondage to your past, because in many ways that is STILL being in bondage to your past.”
The new understanding I have of that verse now allows me to live freely and lightly1 always remembering from whence I came and what God did for me, but living fully present in the now.
How God Works
In some ways I know I’ve been trying to make up for the wrongs I did, but even in trying to do that God has brought good out of what I’ve done, out of the books I’ve written and the coaching groups I’m leading.
He has done great things. Many breakthroughs have been happening. Even this month the report is above amazing that in the first five months those in #KickWeight 2 have lost a combined total of over 456 pounds and this is over the period of two major holidays! By the way, we are not sure how we will be doing #KickWeight 3 but with the success of this group there will definitely be one. May could be the timeframe. Go HERE and signup on the waitlist to be notified first when we open the group.
Sweet Grace and now Sweet Freedom are the number 1 and 2 Christian weight loss memoirs on Amazon. We’ve had reports of folk who have lost over 100 pounds just by reading Sweet Grace and those who are beginning their journey towards healing from emotional eating by reading and following the principles in Sweet Freedom and Sweet Freedom Study Guide.
It’s no wonder though, because these books and coaching groups are God’s. He was the One who directed me to write and coach. Otherwise, I would be living a quiet life, but I am called by my Savior to be a “visible display of His infinite, limitless grace.”2 I must answer that call even though at times the schedule is demanding, hectic and totally overwhelming. Still, He sustains me.
Here is the truth, God is a God of restoration and I trust Him to restore even the wrongs I did in order to allow others to learn from them.
I am vastly different physically from what I was 13 years ago when the before picture I have on my header was taken, which if you notice, is now faded so as not to call attention to the wrongs I’ve done, but to the person I am today.
Truth is, I’m different today than I was yesterday. So are you. We are all in the process of being changed. You may not notice the changes until all of a sudden you realize, I have changed! I am a new creation. “The old is gone. The new has come.”3 That’s a promise from God for you if you have trusted Christ as your Savior!
We are being changed from glory to glory is another promise you can claim as well. “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”4
God’s Love Never Changes
Whether you and I change or not, God’s love for us never changes. He loves you so much He died for you. You are priceless. You are worth everything to Him. He has plans for your good and not your disaster.5
The question becomes not does God love me but do I love God? If I love God my behaviors will confirm that. In talking with food addicts, I won’t mince words, we have to behave as if He is the most important thing, not that pan of brownies.
When we love Him by following and obeying Him, He says He do “far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.”6
We are destined to be the masterpiece He hangs on the wall of heaven’s throne room, the poetry He recites to the angels, the handiwork He shows to all who walk through the Pearly Gates.
“We have become His poetry, a recreated people who will fulfill the destiny He has given each of us for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born He planned in Advance Our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it.”7
