“I need help,” the text on my phone read. It was 11:39 on Sunday morning and I was taking notes on the sermon like I always do, but I knew God wouldn’t mind that I answered her urgent plea…
“What’s going on?” I replied wondering if Andrea* had been in an accident. My mind was racing a million miles an hour.
“I need to get healthy,” she said. “I cannot do this any more. Who I am is dying.”
Tears came to my eyes. Andrea, who weighed over 300 pounds, was desperate to lose weight, so desperate she’d tried many diets, including near starvation diets. Of course, they were short-lived. I’d been praying for her for a long time. We began meeting the next day.
Andrea lives in my town. I can help and coach her directly, but there are many more Andreas who also need help. After I met with her, I thought about the emails I had gotten in the last few weeks from women begging me to let them into Sweet Change Weight Loss Group at a lower price point. I thought about the need for those who come into my higher level coaching groups to have a foundation about what I believe are the essentials to God-centered weight loss.
The Real Issues
Every time an individual comes into my coaching group, I have to teach the core essentials over again. I’m happy to do so, but others in the group already know these keys.
We’ve been so brain-washed by quick fix diets and the latest, greatest pill that will solve our problems that we really don’t understand what our real issues are. They have very little to do with food and everything to do with what’s going on with us emotionally and spiritually.
Of course, the problem is physical as well. To lose weight we have to eat healthy foods in the right amounts. We also have to move our bodies. However, if those were the only components, we’d have solved our problem a long time ago.
Am I Broken?
The real issue, at least for me, was why I couldn’t stay with a plan to eat healthy foods in limited quantities. Why was I always craving certain foods? Why couldn’t I stop myself? Was something broken inside me?
I knew I was different from say, my husband. He has not varied his weight by 15 pounds in 40 years. Yet, he eats three large meals a day. So why can’t I do that? Certain foods I ate, though, only made me want to eat more. I couldn’t stop with even a large meal. I had to have more and more and more.
I had cried out to God for years to “fix” me. He had given me a simple plan years ago. Following that plan felt too difficult, and so I dismissed it.
When I finally began following God’s plan for me, my world shifted. I started having success. I could sell God’s plan for thousands of dollars, but I would feel extremely guilty doing it because it is undoubtedly the simplest hard plan around.
The key is not the “diet” plan I follow, though everyone thinks it has to be. The key is why I follow the God who directs me each day in what I eat and why I should eat that way.
I needed a coach to help me in this process and so do you. In reality, what I’m going to teach you will work with almost any plan you choose. You just have to know it’s the plan God wants for you.
Because of all these reasons and so many more, I felt God leading me to open a lower cost, extremely focused online coaching class to teach the essentials of lifestyle change. #KickWeight is that class.
Will I Talk About Food
Phyllis asked if we would talk about what food to eat. We’re talking about weight loss so that definitely will be a topic we discuss. The way I eat likely is totally different than anyone else, like a dietitian or a doctor, has tried to teach you. Although it is similar to many other plans, it’s different in the way I implement it and the way I have reprogrammed my mind to think. Apparently, it’s working since I’ve lost 260 pounds!
It really is a Romans 12:2 mindset shift. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”1
