“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”1
Why would someone dig a cistern, something designed to hold water, but leave it broken? Perhaps because they have no idea how to fix it or what it is really designed for.
How to Break a Cistern
We bought our first house in 1980. It was a small two-bedroom house on a steep sloping lot. It was a cozy little house with the unique feature of a concrete cistern. It’s only purpose at that time was as a great back porch.
At one time, the cistern had been the way those who lived in the house got their water. A system of collection and piping the water back into the house.
Obviously the house had been upgraded to the city water system so the cistern was rather useless. My husband saw a great usefulness in it, though, as a toolshed.
He had to cut a hole in it first, though. He began by taking a sledge hammer to the wall next to the patio off the basement.
It’s a good thing it was going to be put to a different usage because as soon as he took the sledge hammer to it, it was no longer functional in its original purpose. It was a broken cistern that would never again hold water.
All of us are like broken cisterns. We have in some way broken our communications with God by not following one particular part of His word that rubs us wrong. We have thwarted the original purpose God had for us. He designed us for a purpose—as a vessel to hold His Holy Spirit.
Stressed to the max the one thing our bodies like to hold on to is weight. If you are like me you will lose it eventually if you stay the course. Make a firm commitment to your life and health.
Do not waiver as you have done in the past. How do I know you are prone to do waiver? Anyone who has weight to lose waivers on their commitment or they would have already lost the weight.
The key to change is commitment to a lifestyle that brings health and wellness; a firm commitment, like a covenant between you and God.
A New Design
Broken cisterns take water in, but it flows right out. Shore up the leaks with the solidity of God’s word. Take in His living water that never runs out. Fill yourself daily with worship music, great messages and times of solitude and quiet with the Master.
We can be satisfied at springs of living water.2 We can be half starved and parched from thirst and He will fill us, not with things that harm us but with good things.3
We must learn to take in the truth4 of God and hold it tightly. Like Paul told Timothy, “Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.”5
What Paul is telling his student is to know what his cistern is for and to make sure hit is not broken or leaking.
Patching with Truth
It is only when we know and hang on to the truth, instead of our own desires, that we will have cisterns full with living water. Cisterns are designed to catch rain water, but in reality our cisterns need to be of a completely new design. It will be the new thing6 that Christ is doing in us to make us overflow with His rich fountain of perpetual water.
With Him, our water source, no matter what the container looks like, will never run dry.
“For I am about to do something new.See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”6
