What on earth am I supposed to do? What is my purpose? Have you always wondered the answer to that question? It is so true that without purpose, life is meaningless.
“You are born — You die. Your life is lived in the dash. The dash holds your purpose.” —Gift of Purpose
What is written in your dash?
It’s more than what would be in your obituary, it’s how you live your life on purpose, for a purpose, because of a purpose. Everyone’s purpose is not the same. However, there is one thing that is the same for every person. If you are alive, you have a purpose.
Some people want a magnificient all-encompassing purpose, a show-stopper. Others feel their dream must be something very holy. In reality, your purpose has already been placed inside you by the God of the universe and it is unique to you and you alone.
It’s a simple process really. Think about your talents, gifts and abilities, your dreams and desires. Your purpose is wrapped up in all of that.
Whether you dream of becoming a teacher or a cardiac surgeon, losing 10 or 200 pounds, walking around the block or running a marathon, it is possible through intentional living.
Why is there resistance to my purpose?
The problem happens when you start on the path to your purpose and the first issue comes up that impedes progress. Let’s call that resistance.
“Anything worthwhile, any great endeavor, anything that has the possibility of making a difference in the world, is worthy of resistance paying attention. Resistance is insidious. Resistance never gives up. Resistance is much more persistent than you.” —Gift of Purpose
Many people give up at the first hint of resistance. It’s too difficult. It must not be my purpose or it would be easier. There are a myriad of excuses and resistance encourages every one of them.
Some people just decide to exist, to let life happen to them. Surely if they were meant to have a purpose, it would just happen naturally. Most successful people, however, did not get that way by just sitting around waiting, biding their time.
“To never do is to forever fail.” —Gift of Purpose
No, living a life of purpose, requires some planning and action. There may be some coincidences and divine appointments along the way, but it requires effort on your part.
What actions should I take?
I know many people who want to lose weight, anywhere from 20 pounds to 200 pounds. It will not happen by continuing to do the same things they have been doing over and over again. It takes drawing a line in the sand, making a plan and starting towards a goal.
It’s really that simple.
The quotes included in this post, are part of a book I have put together called “Gift of Purpose: How to Start Living Your Dreams.” It is short, quick and easy-to-read. Chapter titles are: Life, Resistance, Dreams, Surrender, Purpose and Action. Included is a Bible study and teaching guide that can be used individually or in small groups.
